I learned a little something when this working on this doormat. While I am familiar with Memento Mori, I had not yet heard of Vanitas. If you have, then you know that the term refers to a still-life containing symbols of death. Meant as a reminder of the transience of life, the vanity of ambition, and the ephemeral nature of earthly pleasures. In reminding the viewer of inevitable death, a Vanitas painting serves as a veiled exhortation to repent. I think this is a deliciously macabre yet honorable endeavor to pursue, and had to include a few in my little collection. This one features the most beautiful shade of green that I was instantly mesmerized!
