This is the Buchanan — 1850 (Smiths) version originally a Wilson's of Bannockburn design. It was included In the 1850 book 'The Clan and Family Tartans of Scotland' by W and A Smith. This version is widely considered to be the genuine Buchanan tartan.
The Clan Buchanan crest is a hand Coupee holding a ducal cap, or duke’s cornet, proper, with two laurel branches wreathed surrounding the crest. The Clan Buchanan motto is Clarior hinc honos or “Henceforth forward the honour shall grow ever brighter”.
