The earliest records of Clan Mac Nicol trace back to Assynt, where they were originally granted land by the Thanes of Sutherland. A Prince Thane gave the land to one who is identified in clan genealogy as Greg all. However, the clan's control over Assynt ended when Torquil MacLeod married the daughter of the last Mac Nicol chief, passing the territory to the MacLeod's. Following this loss, the Mac Nicol's migrated to the Isle of Skye, where they established themselves at various locations. The Nicholson family of Scorrybreac emerged as the clan's chief family in the west, holding their lands for several centuries. This family, despite the limited documentation, played a significant role on the Isle of Skye.
