What is upholstery fabric?

Upholstery fabric is the material, which covers upholstery, or padding, on furniture and it determines its look and its character. There are many different types of upholstery fabric online and in stores and you can even create custom upholstery fabric, to suit your specific décor requirements. It is important to take your time when choosing the right material for you, as this is something, which will live in your home, office, or other personal space for a long time.

Upholstery fabrics are made from either natural or synthetic fibres. Some popular choices include:

Natural upholstery fabric:
  • Cotton
  • Silk
  • Linen
  • Cotton Blend
  • Chenille
  • Velvet

Synthetic upholstery fabric:
  • Polyester
  • Nylon
  • Acetate
  • Acrylic
  • Rayon
  • Olefin

How is it manufactured?

Every fabric is manufactured differently and has its own fibre weight and weave, thus their own properties and strengths. Synthetic fabrics and natural fabrics are produced very differently.

Whereas synthetic fabrics are made using a combination of natural fibres and chemicals, or are 100% synthetic, natural fibres are produced by taking a natural substance, like a plant, and breaking down its components to make strands of fibres.

Purposes of upholstery fabric

The main purposes of upholstery fabric are to protect the actual upholstery as well as too look aesthetically pleasing. When it comes to creating a bespoke look, many people opt to have stylish fabric covering their chairs, sofas, and other furniture. Upholstery fabric is also perfect for giving old, tired furniture a fresh and enticing look, which can be an exciting and rewarding project. You can also use it for drapes and other decorative applications around the home.

When planning, which fabric is right for you, you need to ask yourself certain questions: what room is this for? What sort of activity will take place in this room? How often will this furniture be used? etc. Why are these questions so vital? Each fabric has its own unique attributes, which make it a great choice to use in a family room, for example, but not the best for formal furniture and vice versa.

Properties

Depending on the material, fabric upholstery can be extremely durable and stand up to daily use very well. There are several properties, which synthetic fabrics have, which make them a welcome choice for many homes. Always read the labels and properties of your chosen fabric, but these can normally include:
  • High resistance to wear
  • Fade-resistant – they retain colour brilliantly
  • Shrink-resistant
  • Much easier to clean
  • Wipeable and washable
  • Sturdy
  • Can be fire-retardant

Overall, natural fibres are not as durable as synthetic fabrics, and require extra care and diligence due to their lower resistance to wear and tear, however, they have a luxurious finish and comfort, which cannot always be replicated and they look beautiful.

Advantages of upholstery fabric

The best thing about upholstery fabric is the huge variety of properties, that makes it possible to decorate furniture per your own specific needs and aesthetic requirements. With custom upholstery you can choose the exact fabric you want, your perfect design and the level of durability, thus creating your own unique fabric, which will give your furniture a bespoke and exclusive look.
